Contraception: Finding the Right Option for Your Lifestyle

Choosing the right contraception is one of the most important decisions you can make for your health, your relationships and your future family plans. In the UK there are now more safe and effective options than ever before.

Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC)

Copper Coil (IUD)

Failure rate ~0.8%. Hormone-free. Immediate return to fertility on removal. Can also be used as emergency contraception. May cause heavier periods or cramping initially.

Hormonal Coil (IUS)

Failure rate ~0.7%. Excellent for heavy periods and endometriosis. Very low hormone levels enter the bloodstream. Around a third of women have irregular spotting in the first few months.

Contraceptive Implant

Failure rate under 1%. Oestrogen-free and requires no daily action. Some women report potential weight changes or a short delay in return of fertility.

Short-Acting Hormonal Contraception

  • The Combined Pill or Progesterone-Only (Mini) Pill — can regulate periods, improve acne and reduce PMS. Typical failure rate 7–9% due to missed pills.
  • Contraceptive Patch — changed weekly, delivers hormones through the skin.

Barrier Methods & STI Protection

  • Condoms — the only method that also protects against STIs. Typical failure rate 13–18%.
  • Diaphragm — reusable silicone cup used with spermicide.

Permanent Options

Vasectomy is a highly effective option for men who are certain they do not want (more) children. Over 99% effective once follow-up testing confirms absence of sperm. Reversals are possible but not always successful.
